It is not a substitute for the Grotto, which is a denser and more theatrical display in a chamber you reach by boat. But it is real, and it is free, and it is the best hour in the district.

What Is West Of The Village?

Two limestone landmarks on the road towards Marokopa, and the drive itself. Mangapōhue Natural Bridge is a 17-metre arch, the roof of a collapsed cave, reached by an easy 800-metre return walk within the reserve, and it is one of the district's stops Tourism New Zealand points visitors towards alongside the caves. Marokopa Falls drops 35 metres and sits a few minutes further on, with a short track from the road.

The road out there is narrow, winding rural New Zealand at its best, and it takes longer than the distances suggest. Allow two hours for both stops plus the driving, more if you stop for photographs, which you will.

Aranui is worth booking on its own terms, as an hour of the best stone in the district, and the combo pricing exists because that is how it sells. Just do not book it expecting more of what the Grotto gave you.
