They are the two things most first-time visitors want out of the Waikato, they are an hour and a quarter apart, and almost every itinerary tries to fit them into one day. It works. It works better in one direction than the other, and the difference is about an hour of standing around.

Can You Do Waitomo And Hobbiton In One Day?

Yes. The two sites sit 83 kilometres apart, about an hour and a quarter of driving. The cave tour runs 45 minutes and the Hobbiton tour about two and a half hours, so the touring itself is about three hours and fifteen minutes, before check-in and travel. What makes it a long day is everything either side of that.

From Auckland, the full loop runs roughly twelve hours door to door. From Rotorua it is shorter and easier, because Rotorua sits on the far side of Matamata and the geography stops fighting you. The operator's own driving times are the numbers to plan against.

Which Should You Do First?

Waitomo first, Hobbiton second, if you are starting from Auckland. Cave departures run every 30 minutes from 9am to 5pm, but a later available departure is not a guarantee that a missed booking can be changed. Hobbiton runs to fixed tour times and a two-and-a-half-hour format; arrive at The Shire’s Rest at least 20 minutes before departure.

Use the booked times and the drive between them to decide the order; an early cave visit is one workable Auckland plan. Take an early cave slot, drive across in the early afternoon, take a mid-afternoon Hobbiton tour, and drive home in the evening.

Coming from Rotorua the sensible order flips, because Matamata is on the way. Hobbiton in the morning, Waitomo in the afternoon, and then you are pointed west at the end of the day rather than doubling back.

How Much Does The Combined Day Cost?

Add the current ticket prices for both sites, then budget separately for fuel and food. The cave tour is from NZ$81 on the operator's own pricing, and the Hobbiton adult ticket is NZ$130, with youth 11 to 17 at NZ$65 and ages 0–10 free with a ticket booked in advance.

Neither site includes food, and both have a café you will probably use. Fuel for a 450-kilometre Auckland loop is not trivial either. It is worth knowing the real total before deciding whether to split the two sites across two days instead.

What Has To Give?

The second cave, and any idea of a leisurely lunch. A Waitomo and Hobbiton day has no room in it for Ruakuri, which runs 90 minutes and needs its own drive from the village, or for the free walks west of Waitomo. If you wanted those, this is a two-day plan.

It also has no room for a slow start. Leaving Auckland at nine instead of seven is the difference between an evening drive home and a night one. The parts of the day that compress are the drives, and they do not compress much.

What you should not do is walk into it expecting a relaxed day. Twelve hours from Auckland with about three hours and fifteen minutes of touring inside it is a schedule, not an outing. Is There A Version That Removes The Driving?
